Winter is a time for introspection, slowing down abit and taking the space to have a think about what you really want in life. Recently a good friend passed away.
Young at 51 but he’d lived a very good life. He was very loved and had achieved success in all areas of life including dancing and guiding 3 children into adulthood.
His sister in her eulogy of her brother spoke of the “The Dash” of life.
The mark used between birth and death. For example 2 January 1956 – 3 November 2020. Such a wee mark but holds so much.
The eulogy speaks of how well we use this time. How well we love, enjoy, play and laugh. Material things really don’t matter. Who really cares what sort of car we have, what possessions we gather or the even the places we travel to. What matters is who we are and how we treat others. A very thought provoking eulogy that spoke to many of us present.
It created many questions within ourselves.
Questions such as when your eulogy is being read out what do you want to be remembered for? What do you want to have done in your life? Who do you want to have been?
Would you be proud of the things they say about you and how you spent your DASH?
Take a moment write your own eulogy and then get on and DO and BE the things you haven’t created yet.
Here’s a copy of THE DASH:
I READ OF A MAN WHO STOOD TO SPEAK AT THE FUNERAL OF A FRIEND
HE REFERRED TO THE DATES ON HIS TOMBSTONE FROM THE BEGINNING
………. TO THE END.
HE NOTED THAT FIRST CAME THE DATE OF BIRTH AND SPOKE OF THE FOLLOWING DATES WITH TEARS.
BUT HE SAID WHAT MATTERED MOST OF ALL WAS THE DASH BETWEEN THOSE YEARS.
FOR THAT DASH REPRESENTS ALL THE TIME HE’D SPENT ALIVE ON
EARTH AND ONLY THOSE WHO LOVED HIM KNOW WHAT THAT LITTLE LINE IS WORTH.
FOR IT MATTERS NOT HOW MUCH WE OWN. THE CARS…. THE HOUSE…..
THE CASH. WHAT MATTERS IS HOW WE LIVE AND LOVE AND HOW WE SPEND OUR DASH…..
SO THINK ABOUT THOSE LONG AND HARD, ARE THERE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE? FOR YOU NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH TIME IS I LEFT
THAT CAN STILL BE RE-ARRANGED.
IF WE COULD JUST SLOW DOWN ENOUGH TO CONSIDER WHATS TRUE AND
REAL AND ALWAYS TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE WAY OTHER PEOPLE FEEL.
BE LESS QUICK TO ANGER, AND SHOW APPRECIATION MORE
FOR THE PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES, LIKE WE’VE NEVER LOVED BEFORE.
IF WE TREAT EACH OTHER WITH RESPECT AND MORE OFTEN WEAR A
SMILE… REMEMBERING THAT THIS SPECIAL DASH MIGHT ONLY LAST
AWHILE.
SO WHEN YOUR EULOGY IS BEING READ WITH YOUR LIFES ACTIONS TO REHASH….
WOULD YOU BE PROUD OF THE THINGS THEY SAY ABOUT HOW YOU SPENT YOUR DASH?

A good reminder just to slow down and smell the roses too, Allison! Thanks.
