Embracing Change: A Journey to Self-Improvement
Many of us resist change, clinging to the familiar and comfortable. But change is essential for growth and self-improvement. It’s about evolving, adapting, and becoming the best version of ourselves. This blog explores what change means and offers insights and practical tips to help you navigate your journey.
The nature of change
Change can be sudden, gradual, welcome and unwelcome.
Sometimes, we choose to change, like changing jobs or creating a new exercise regime. It might be a desire for personal growth, such as improving communication skills or self-confidence.
At other times, it’s imposed on us, for example, when being made redundant or a partner suddenly says they want out of a relationship.
Change shares a common thread—it propels us out of our comfort zones.
Change Can Overwhelm
Change can be hard, we might want it, but it can still be scary and overwhelming. Often, it’s the precursor to making the change, which is tricky. Our minds go into overdrive, thinking things like
is this the right time to change
what if things don’t work out
perhaps I’m better to stay with what I know,
I’m not sure I can start something new
I’m too; too young
I know I’m stuck, but I don’t know what to do to get unstuck and so on and so on.
As humans, we seem inherently resistant to change. We like familiarity and routine. When we resist change, it is often about the fear of the unknown and the uncertainty, often wanting it but not wanting it simultaneously. The overwhelm occurs when we get stuck in that cycle of shall I or shan’t I embrace this change?
The Upsides of Change
Embracing change provides many upsides, including:
Growth and Development - change helps us develop new skills and knowledge and deepen our understanding of ourselves and our needs.
Resilience - adapting to change builds resilience, making us better equipped to handle future challenges.
Fulfilment – achieving goals and overcoming blocks can lead to a greater sense of life satisfaction
Opportunities – if we are brave enough, change can open up new possibilities, experiences and relationships
Overcoming Resistance
Resistance to change is natural. As mentioned, it often stems from fear of the unknown, loss of control, or discomfort with new situations. Here are some strategies and practical tips to overcome resistance and build resilience during times of change:
1. Acknowledge Your Fears - identify and acknowledge the fears holding you back. Understanding your fears is the first step in addressing them.
Practical Tip: Take the time to self-reflect and understand what the fear is truly about. To do this, use meditation and journaling. These can help you stay present and grounded during change, especially with emotional upheaval.
2. Shift Your Mindset - viewing change as an opportunity rather than a threat can shift your perspective. Embrace a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as chances to learn and develop rather than something to be pessimistic about. Yes, it can take time to shift into this perspective if the change is unwanted, so go gentle with yourself.
Practical Tip: Use coping strategies such as mindfulness and positive thinking.
3. Set Realistic Goals – break down more significant changes into manageable steps. This will make the process less overwhelming and provide a sense of accomplishment as you progress.
Practical Tip: Create a Vision Board of your goals or the steps you need to take to create the change. It’s a powerful tool to keep you focused and inspired, making them more achievable and tangible.
4. Seek Support – change can be isolating, but you don’t have to face it alone. Surround yourself with supportive people, friends, family, mentors and professionals who encourage and motivate you. Sharing your journey with others can provide accountability and encouragement.
Practical Tip: Ask a good friend if they could be your support person who you can talk to about the change you are going through, making a regular time to connect and who you are accountable to.
5. Stay Flexible - be open to adjusting your plans as needed. Flexibility allows you to adapt to unexpected changes, challenges, and new exciting opportunities.
Practical Tip: To keep fears at bay, a Plan B can be helpful, meaning if this doesn’t happen, then this Plan B will be my next step.
6. Celebrate Small Wins - acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating milestones keeps you motivated and reinforces the positive aspects of change.
Practical Tip: Pop in your diary a note every week or fortnight to acknowledge your wins and progress.
Summary
Any change is a journey, not a destination. Understanding that change is a natural and necessary part of life can make it easier to embrace and manage.
Embrace change with an open mind and a positive attitude, and you’ll discover new strengths and opportunities along the way. Remember, every step you take is a step towards a more fulfilling and empowered life.
