Passion isn't a dirty word. It's just time to face the fear and live your best life.

As I write this, I wonder how many of you have struggled to find a passion at some time, whether for work or outside work. If you've been a client of mine, I'm sure we would have talked about it in some way, and you know my belief that Passion is absolutely needed to live a full and satisfied life.

You may not know, but I struggled to find my work passion for many years. I sort of knew I wanted to be a teacher. I taught in a school for a while, then went into corporate human resources roles. Still, it took me a long time to work out that I liked to teach people individually or in small groups, not in an institution or large organisation, which was less personal.

A Definition

Your definition of Passion may be different from mine or your friends'. Here are words that mean something similar to Passion:

  • Spirited

  • Strong emotion

  • Ardour

  • Zest

  • Zeal

  • Intensity

  • Enthusiasm

  • Driven

  • Dedicated

  • Energetic

Which one/s fits your description of Passion?

Is it fear?

Reticence to use the word Passion can be due to fear. Fear of the feelings it creates. Once we connect strongly with something, and feel excitement, right alongside that, quite commonly, fear appears. It can be incredibly scary to find something we connect to. Also, questions arise like, am I allowed to do this, or how will it appear to others, or am I supposed to be doing this? Allowing Passion can be challenging if it impacts other people, for instance, a change of career direction, which could mean a drop in income.

It's not old fashioned

In case you haven't worked it out yet, I love the word Passion. This year, I want to return to Singing. Absolutely a Passion of mine. Lately, my creativity has focused more on my work, but now it's time to get back into it. And that's why we can't always just go and do it; sometimes it's about timing.

The main thing is to own it. Acknowledge it. Plan how you will bring it into your life and put it out to the universe to help create it.

How do I identify a Passion?

Passions can be identified in many ways. One way is to notice your interest, perhaps online or when you are out and about. Or you hear from a friend they are playing a sport or card game that sounds interesting. Those times, there is a connection and interest, the mmmm, I like the look of that or the sound of that. It can be too easy to push the feeling or thought away at those times, making excuses like I don't have the time.

You can find something you like by trying it out, just like Pickleball for me. My interest has grown over the last six months and is now a Passion.
